Handicap Adjustments
The Rooney Cup has evolved from no handicaps at all to a fully handicapped, 96-point marathon. Best Ball and Singles were first played off handicap in 2006; by 2010 every format was handicapped, with everyone playing from the same tees. In 2024, the council adopted the 80% rule for all four team formats.
Founding Era (1998–2005)
It started in Myrtle Beach in 1998: every hole counted as a point, Team Rooney beat Team Rymer 67–61, and Keith Hoffman bought the trophy and named himself MVP. From there came the three-points-per-match system, the first two-man scramble day, and the early dynasties of Rooney and Nemec.
Modern Era (2006–Today)
From the first Arizona trip and the introduction of handicaps, through Gamblepalooza, COVID, and the 25th at Kiawah, the Cup has become a five-format, 96-point grind. The ledger now tracks every point, every MVP and LVP, and every man who has ever teed it up — all feeding into the records you see on this page.
